Summary of Activities

1997

Project team constituted. Feasibility study carried out. This
Entailed visits to several companies where some senior managers
were interviewed. The objective was to obtain information
regarding availability of technically skilled personnel (middle and
low level employees) and the level of such skills. Technical
schools/colleges were also visited. Companies/organizations visited included: Nigerian Employers Consultative Association, Shell Petroleum Development Corporation, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Carnaud Metalbox Nig. Plc, Dunlop Nigeria Plc, Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company, John Holt, Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas Project, Metalum Ltd, Cadbury Nigeria Plc, Nestle Nig. Plc. ,etc.

1998

Overseas trips to projects similar to the one being contemplated. Two schools were visited: Centro Elis in Rome, Italy and Dualtech training center in Philippines. 

1999

Three-year Technical agreement signed with Dualtech and arrival of consultant from the Philippines. Five-Year Lease agreement signed with CarnaudMetalbox for use of premises.  Renovation of the premises and purchase of furniture and some equipment. Recruitment of some teachers. Marketing of training programs to companies.

2000

Start-up of classes with 8 workers from two companies on March 27, 2000. Recruitment and training of more staff. Fundraising applications to donors. Purchase of more training equipment. Marketing of training programs continued. More response from companies.

2001

Start-up of the 3-year training program for boys from poor homes. 15 of them were selected after a rigorous admission process. They were all sponsored by donor agencies. Public presentation of the Institute was done on the 4th of October. Top Lagos State government officials were present for the event. Purchase of more training equipment. An instructor from Dualtech, Manila was around to install the equipment and train some instructors. More instructors were employed.

2002

Overseas training of one of the instructors in Dualtech. Local training of another instructor. Graduation of the first set of workers took place. Many captains of industry were present for the event. There was also media coverage of the event. Mr. Rex Trugo, consultant from Dualtech went back to the Philippines. New staff was recruited to continue some of his job. The 1st set of young boys did their first external (National) examination.  They started their in-plant training with two companies immediately after their exams. New set of 15 young boys was admitted into the 3-year program. They are also on scholarship. More companies sent their workers to different training programs in IIT. Representatives from our donors visited.

2003

More company workers sent for training in IIT. The 2nd set of young boys did their external examinations. This time their result was above average. Another set of 15 young boys admitted into IIT. In-plant training of the older boys continued. Three instructors sent for different training programs locally. Graduation of another set of workers bringing the total to 27 workers. Some part-time resource persons were recruited. Development of permanent site started.

2004

This program for young boys continues to be the primary reason for the existence of IIT. The same procedure as used last year was adopted for the admission of a new set of students (EMY-C4). 15 of them were eventually selected. 11 of the 15 boys admitted in July 2001 (EMY-C1) completed their training in June 2004. They will be doing the graduation ceremony in December 2004. Practically all of them have been employed in different companies. EMY-C3 students did their first external (National) examination in June 2004. The EMY-C2 students continued their in-plant training during the period under review. A new entrepreneurial program was also initiated in conjunction with another NGO known as Junior Achievement of Nigeria (JAN). It is called Company program in which the students are taught how to set up, run and liquidate a company in 15 weeks. EMY-C1 students went through the program in May/June 2004. The Electromechanics program for workers continued and new classes were started.

Four (4) new part-time instructors and one (1) full-time instructor were hired this year given the increased workload.

Preparations/start-up of permanent site construction works. Work started at the site in the month of May.

2005

Graduation ceremony was held on December 2, 2005. A total of 13 young students and 27 workers graduated. All the graduates are now employed.
IIT (mostly EMY-C2) participated in the 1st Lagos State Science and Technology fair which took place in April 2005.
IIT (EMY-C3) won the most innovative school award of the Junior Achievement program. The award was received in an impressive ceremony which took place at Protea hotel, Lekki on October 28th.
NGO Actec and ONAY visited IIT from Belgium and Spain respectively for their follow –up of the IIT project. Construction works continued at the IIT site.
Staff development progam was held on a number of days with the part-time instructors attending. IIT Staff went for different training programs. A new set of 15 students were admitted.
Managers from FESTO automation Company visited IIT. Discussed areas for future collaboration since they are our main source of automation training equipment. Officials from City & Guilds of London also visited. Officials from the Lagos State Ministry of Education also came for pre-approval inspection on July 29th. Visit from technical director of Consolidated Breweries to discuss recruitment of IIT graduates took place in August.
Purchased some equipment items especially in automation department to improve equipment/trainee ratio.

2006

With the help of the students IIT moved to the permanent site in December 2006. Nampak, our host of 6 years donated practically all the mechanical equipment in the workshop at the temporary site. They were moved to the permanent site almost immediately. PZ industries also donated a hydraulics trainer. Discussion started with Guinness Nig. Ltd with regards to possible donation to IIT in addition to other areas of collaboration. Two of our staff resigned their appointment. Two new staff were recruited almost immediately. Staff were sent for different training programs. Darlington A traveled to Europe (Spain & Belgium) for fundraising drive in March. IIT came first in a quiz competition among the technical colleges in Lagos and will represent Lagos zone at the national level. A new course on variable speed drives ran for the first time based on request from companies. A new trainer was purchased for the purpose. 2006 Graduation ceremony did not hold due to movement to the permanent site. Several companies came to make presentations to the EMY-C3 graduating students.

2007

School resumed at the permanent site on January 15, 2007. The first few months were spent installing the equipment and furniture that were moved from the old site. The students did most of the installations. Remedial construction work by Donkem continued on the site until March. The DG & DTS went to Abuja for roundtable meeting with the minister of education on February 1st. and 5th. The head of automation went to Abuja for an international equipment exhibition March 29th. He also went to Abuja for a 5-day training program on mechatronics in April. This time he was accompanied by the Industrial Coordinator. Guinness donated the first N5million to IIT in April.
Several persons visited IIT throughout the year including:
The Training manager & Recruitment manager of Procter & Gamble visited – January 22, 2007. It was a familiarization visit.
Dr. Schmitter, a retired lecturer of the Lagos Business School visited IIT. He offered to re-design and find a reliable company to host IIT website.
Some IIT graduates.
Mr. Trenoye (Factory 2 manager) and Lala Ademola both of Nigerite visited.
Mr. Dayo Johnson of Nigeria Cleaning Services (NCS) also visited. Eventually he sent some of his staff to IIT for training.
Miss Priscille D’AMARZIT from IECD in France. Main objective of her visit was to get acquainted with IIT and see possible areas of collaboration in the future.
Mr. Kayode Falola, Operations improvement manager of Guinness visited
Mr. Tunde Orukotan, Capabilities Development Manager of Nigeria Bottling Company came visiting.
Mr. Clifford Jones-General manager, technical and Jerome Bello both of Consolidated Breweries visited. Mr. Bello, an old friend of IIT came to introduce Mr. Clifford Jones who was taking over from him at Consolidated Breweries.
Actec president (Mr. Guy Caeymaex), Etex group Managing Director (Philippe Coens), and MDs of Nigerite & Eternit also visited IIT. The Etex group made a donation to IIT on that day.

Supply chain head and the executive training manager of Nigerian Breweries Plc also visited.
Some staff of British Council visited
Staff of Lafarge (WAPCO) cement came on familiarization visit.
Mr. Aedo of Cargill ventures Ltd also visited just before IIT went on vacation in December. He got information about IIT from Nestle and Nigerite.

EMY-C4 did their City & Guilds exam in June. Several companies came to interview them for jobs between July and August.
There was flooding of Isheri-North area some weeks between August and October. IIT was closed for those periods. 
New set of 24 EMY (C7) students were admitted after the usual rigorous process in September.
The fifth graduation ceremony of IIT took place in December. Several dignitaries were in attendance.
With the help of ACTEC, more furniture and equipment were purchased to greatly improve the equipment: trainee ratio.
